Experience the FlightSchool.sg Advantage
Our Founder, Fabian Lim, obtained his Private Pilot License in a remarkable 19 days back in September 2006, thanks to his intensive use of flight simulators! His proficiency with flight simulators further expedited his acquisition of his other flight ratings - securing an instrument rating in 10 days, a multi-engine rating in 5 days, and a single-pilot jet rating in 14 days!
Leveraging his deep-rooted expertise, Fabian has masterfully refined and evolved the teaching methodology at FlightSchool.sg over the years. This relentless pursuit of excellence has led to extraordinary achievements for our student pilots, setting new benchmarks in their aviation journey.
The reality is that our PPL Preparatory Course effectively pays for itself: The course enables you to acquire crucial procedural and flying skills in our cost-effective full-motion simulator, rather than in an actual aircraft, leading to significant cost savings (aircraft, fuel, landing fees, and instructor costs) and time savings (in-aircraft time required for taxi, takeoff, landing, and flying to and from a training area).
Consequently, our simulator-based flight training approach results not only helping you to minimise the total number of hours needed to earn a Private Pilot License; it also reduces your overall flight training cost.
Indeed, FlightSchool.sg holds the distinctive accomplishment of helping the most number of Singapore-based student pilots to obtain their unrestricted Private Pilot License in as little as 40 flying hours, considerably less than the typical 70 to 80-hour national average, and with majority of our students earning their Private Pilot License in less than 30 days. In fact in 2023, three of our student pilots achieved their PPL in less than 20 days!
The efficacy of full-motion flight simulators for flight training has long been recognized by the US FAA. Major airlines, like Singapore Airlines, are now initiating pilot training in full-motion simulators under the newly established Multi-Crew Pilot License (MPL) program.
As you search for a fitting flight school for your PPL training, it's crucial to comprehend that there are various other considerations and pathways to obtaining a Private Pilot License that might not be immediately apparent.
Choosing FlightSchool.sg for your flight training gives you the advantage of being able to obtain complimentary consultation on other equally important aviation-related issues like flight school selection, Part 61 versus Part 141, Visa application, TSA Security application process, aircraft rental post-PPL in Singapore, aircraft ownership tips, recurrent & bi-annual flight training procedures, pursuing further ratings, and commercial pilot options, among others.
At FlightSchool.sg, we offer complimentary guidance & consultation throughout your entire journey, from the initial steps to the successful attainment of your Private Pilot License.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs):
Q1. Why obtain a Private Pilot License in the United States instead of Singapore?
For three main reasons:
1) Ample availability of US-registered rental aircraft in Singapore
After spending all the time & money to earn your PPL, surely you wish to bring your family and friends on board an aircraft piloted by your good self. Or you wish to spend a weekend flying to Penang and staying for one or two nights before heading back to Singapore.
It is worth noting that pilots can only fly an aircraft that is registered in the same jurisdiction as their pilot license. Meaning Singapore PPL holders can only fly Singapore-registered aircraft and USA PPL holders can only fly US-registered aircraft etc.
The fact is, there are ample US-registered light aircraft available in Singapore for rent, while the inventory of Singapore-registered light aircraft is limited to those beloging to Singapore-registered flying schools. Hence, even if you hold a Singapore PPL, you are extremely limited by the number of aircrafts you can fly!
2) Ample availability of US-registered rental aircraft in most parts of the World
Another significant advantage of an FAA PPL is the ability to rent and fly a US-registered anywhere in the world other than in the USA and Singapore (subject to a 1-2 hour assessment flight).
Upgrade your holidays from road trips to air trips. Holidays will never be the same again!
3) Lower Cost of Flight Training
Flight training in the United States can cost anywhere between USD12,000 and 18,000 for a 40-hour Private Pilot License package. The final bill depends on many factors, including but not limited to:
i) Location of Flight School
Flight training in the East Coast (e.g. New York) and West Coast (e.g. California) will generally be more costly than in Texas, Washington, and Nevada.
ii) Number of Hours of Flight Training Incurred
The national average in the US for the average number of hours of flight training required to earn a Private Pilot License level is between 70-80 hours. The good news is FlightSchool.sg students have historically been able to earn their PPL in 40-45 hours.
*How about earning a Private Pilot License in Australia?
We do have students who opt for the Australian route to earn their PPL. This is because their primary purpose of earning a PPL is to eventually fly for the airlines. In other words, they are not concerned with the fact that there are currently no Australian-registered aircraft available for rent in Singapore.
Q2. What is the process to renew the US Private Pilot License? Does a US PPL expire?
The good news is the US Private Pilot License (PPL) itself does not expire, but there are certain requirements a pilot must meet to keep the privileges of the license active. These include holding a current Class 3 medical certificate and completing a biennial (every two years) flight review. The flight review is a form of recurrent training to ensure that the pilot maintains the necessary skills and knowledge. Without these, a pilot cannot legally exercise the privileges of their PPL.
The US PPL is unlike the Singapore PPL, where the latter requires a logging of 5 hours within a calendar year before a Singapore PPL can be renewed for the following year.
Q3. What type of aircraft can a Private Pilot License holder fly?
A Private PIlot is able to fly any single-engine aircraft with appropriate Class Rating) up to 5700kg MTOW. Additional Class Ratings may be obtained through additional training and checkout with a Certified Flight Instructor for faster high-performance single-engine aircraft, including those with retractable gear and variable propeller. A private pilot is able to fly twin-engine aircraft by earning a multi-engine rating.
Q4. With a US PPL, can I fly at night and carry passengers?
Yes, with a U.S. Private Pilot License (PPL), you are allowed to fly at night and carry passengers, provided you meet specific requirements.
Here are the key points:
1. Night Flying: To fly at night, you must have completed the required night flying training during your PPL training. This includes a certain number of hours of night flight and takeoffs and landings at night.
2. Carrying Passengers: You can carry passengers as a private pilot. However, there are restrictions on flying for hire or compensation.
3. Currency Requirements: To carry passengers, the pilot must have completed three takeoffs and landings within the preceding 90 days. If these landings are to be at night (defined as the time period from one hour after sunset to one hour before sunrise), these takeoffs and landings must also be done during this period to carry passengers at night.
4. Medical Certificate: You must have a valid medical certificate (typically Class 3 for private pilots).
As long as you meet these requirements and any other applicable regulations, you can legally fly at night and carry passengers with a U.S. PPL.
Q5. How long is a Class 3 Medical valid for?
The validity of an FAA Class 3 Medical Certificate depends on the age of the holder at the time of the medical examination:
1. Under Age 40: If you are under 40 years old when you obtain the certificate, it is valid for 60 calendar months (5 years).
2. Age 40 and Over: If you are 40 years old or older, the certificate is valid for 24 calendar months (2 years).
It's important to note that the validity period ends on the last day of the month it was issued. For example, if you received your Class 3 Medical Certificate on June 15, 2023, and you were under 40 at that time, it would be valid until June 30, 2028.
Q6. Can I pursue an Instrument Rating after earning the US Private Pilot License?
Absolutely! Not only is it possible, we highly recommend you puruse your FAA Instrument Rating as soon as practicable due to the unpredictable weather in Southeast Asia.
To this end, do note that while FAA PPL holders can easily choose to purse their Instrument Rating at anytime, the same cannot be said for Singapore & Malaysia PPL holders!
Instrument rating is unfortunately not offered at any Singapore or Malaysia-registered flying clubs.
In other words, Singapore and Malaysia PPL holders (i.e. recreational pilots) do not have the option of earning an Instrument Rating. The only way to obtain an instrument rating for Singapore and Malaysia PPL holders is to enroll with professional flight training academies who offer Commercial Pilot License (CPL) training bundled with Instrument & Multi-Engine (IR & ME) Ratings like Singapore Flying College (SFC) or Malaysian Flying Academy (MFA).
Consequently, as a PPL-only pilot without Instrument Rating, you are only able to file a VFR (Visual Flight Rules) flight plan and fly during Visual Meteorological Conditions (VMC) only.
FAA Private Pilot License (USA) Requirements:
– At least 17 years of age (at the time of the flight test)
– English proficient (can speak, read and write)
– Color vision: If you can’t pass the initial color vision test but otherwise meet medical standards, you may be issued a medical certificate with the limit “NOT VALID FOR NIGHT FLIGHT OR BY COLOR SIGNAL CONTROL.” To remove the color vision limitation, a Class-3 medical applicant must demonstrate the ability to pass an Operational Color Vision Test (OCVT) during the day. The OCVT consists of the following:
A Signal Light Test (SLT): Identify in a timely manner aviation red, green, and white
Aeronautical chart reading: Read and correctly interpret in a timely manner aeronautical charts, including print in various sizes, colors, and typefaces; conventional markings in several colors; and, terrain colors
– 20/40 (able to see at 20ft what a normally sighted person is able to see at 40ft) or better in each eye separately, with or without correction
- Able to pass the FAA Class-3 Medical exam
Age Limitation
Regarding age limitation, the minimum age to take the FAA PPL written and practical tests is 17 years old. In order to fly solo in an aircraft, the student pilot needs to be at least 16 years of age. There is no maximum age limit to take the FAA PPL written and practical tests. However, note that there is no minimum age to commence ground and flight training. So even children (we recommend at least 13 years of age can start to learn to fly!).
Education Requirements
Also, note that there are no minimum educational requirements to earn an FAA PPL. However, educational requirements are typically imposed by airlines and corporate charter companies.
Eyesight Requirements
In order to pass the FAA PPL Class-3 Medical Exam, here’s the official requirement as per the Code of Federal Regulations §67.303:
(a) Distant visual acuity of 20/40 or better in each eye separately, with or without corrective lenses. If corrective lenses (spectacles or contact lenses) are necessary for 20/40 vision, the person may be eligible only on the condition that corrective lenses are worn while exercising the privileges of an airman certificate.
(b) Near vision of 20/40 or better, Snellen equivalent, at 16 inches in each eye separately, with or without corrective lenses.
(c) Ability to perceive those colors necessary for the safe performance of airman duties.
(d) No acute or chronic pathological condition of either eye or adnexa that interferes with the proper function of an eye, that may reasonably be expected to progress to that degree, or that may reasonably be expected to be aggravated by flying.
14-Day Accelerated FAA PPL Preparatory Course (Full-Time)
Similar in scope to our 12-week course, but delivered on a 14-day full-time timetable. The Private Pilot License (PPL) candidate prepares for the FAA PPL by undergoing daily ground-school classes (3 hours per session) and flight sim training classes (1-2 hours per session) over a 14-day period. At the end of two weeks, and upon passing our internal ground and flight assessment tests, the PPL candidate will be able to proceed to Phase II of the training in the USA. Phase II should take no more than 30 days in total.
Phase 1 - 10-Week RAAus Recreational Pilot Certificate (RPC) Preparatory Course
Ideally suited for students 13 to 15 years old, the goal of this course is to allow a Recreational Pilot Certificate (RPC) candidate to prepare for the Recreational Aviation Australia Ltd (RAAus) Recreational Pilot Certificate Written Knowledge Test & Practical Flight Test by undergoing once-a-week ground-school classes (3 hours per session) and flight sim training classes (10 hours total) over a 10 week period.
A total of 10-hours of flight training is included in the Recreational Pilot Certificate (RPC) Preparatory Course. Flight training is conducted 100% via the use of our fixed-based flight simulator. Due to its low cost of operations, this is the most efficient and cost-effective solution to preparing candidates for their Recreational Pilot Certificate (RPC).
At the end of 10 weeks, and upon passing our internal ground and flight assessment tests, the RPC candidate will be able to proceed to Phase II of the training in Australia.
Phase II comprising 20 hours of in-aircraft flight training should take no more than 3 weeks in total - or even sooner if weather and winds permit.
Our Recreational Pilot Certificate (RPC) ground school classes are held EVERY SATURDAY from 9am to 12pm.
